Introduction
You have a finished coffee design, but the first quote is higher than expected—or the MOQ is more than you can buy. That is common: bag format, print method, number of designs, material and add-ons all affect setup. This guide shows how to compare the real order cost, not just the unit price.
MOQ is the smallest production quantity accepted for a defined specification. It is not automatically the minimum for every bag, size or material. A supplier may calculate it per order, size, artwork or material structure. Confirm the rule before combining products.
Digital printing sends artwork to the press without a dedicated engraved cylinder for each design. It is flexible for launches, seasonal blends, multiple SKUs and short runs. The trade-off is often a higher unit price as quantities grow.
Gravure transfers ink from engraved cylinders to the film. The cylinders add upfront cost, but larger runs spread that cost across more bags. It can suit stable flagship designs with repeat demand; break-even depends on film, colours, bag format and cylinder charges.
Published MOQs vary by supplier. Flat-bottom, side-gusset and stand-up pouches use different forming and sealing arrangements. Size affects film use and machine setup. A large total order may still fall short when split across designs. For example, 6,000 bags divided among six artworks may be treated differently from 6,000 with one design.
AT PACK’s published listings show why a company-wide MOQ should not be assumed. One flat-bottom product listing shows 2,000 pieces; one side-gusset product listing shows 1,000. These figures apply to specific configurations, not every custom size, material or artwork. Confirm the MOQ against the final specification.
Flat-bottom, side-gusset and stand-up bags use different converting steps, widths, folds and seals, so their MOQs can differ. Multi-design orders may also have a per-design minimum even when the total order meets the overall MOQ.
For a new brand, ask whether a stock bag with a custom label is an option. It can test demand before full printing. Move to a custom run when sales and artwork are stable.
Digital printing transfers artwork from a digital file without a conventional engraved gravure cylinder for each colour. It is often considered for shorter runs, multiple SKUs, test launches or changing designs. Unit prices may be higher at larger volumes, and film, finish and colour options depend on the production system. File preparation, proofing and pouch converting still apply.
Gravure printing transfers ink from engraved cylinders to packaging film. Cylinder preparation creates an upfront tooling cost, so it is often more economical when artwork is stable and order or repeat volume is larger. Design revisions may require cylinder changes. The US EPA’s flexible-package printing guidance describes the cylinder process, while the Flexographic Technical Association explains digital printing for short-run customised packaging.
Choose by current quantity, artwork changes and repeat-order plans—not by asking which method is always better. For several small SKUs, digital printing can reduce separate cylinder costs. For a stable, high-volume blend, gravure may offer a lower unit cost.
Unit price reflects the full specification. A lower quote may use thinner film, fewer features or a different delivery term; request matching specifications from each supplier.

Material structure and thickness affect film use and cost. A laminate chosen for stronger barrier performance or a specific appearance may cost more than a simpler structure. Compare the full layer sequence and total thickness, not only a material code. The food-contact layer must suit the product and destination market.
Large bags use more film; thicker structures use more material. MOPP/VMPET/PE combines an outer print layer, a metallised barrier and a PE seal layer. Kraft-look structures may add paper. Compare the full layer sequence and thickness, not only the shorthand.
Colour count, print coverage, artwork complexity and finishes affect cost. Matte, gloss, soft-touch, spot effects or foil stamping can add process steps. Confirm whether each design version needs separate setup.
Valves, zippers, tear notches, tin ties and windows add components and assembly. A one-way valve releases CO₂ from freshly roasted coffee while limiting air entry, but must be correctly positioned and sealed. Confirm these features are included in the quote.
Freight, cartons, duties and Incoterms affect landed cost. Compare product and shipping costs separately; an ex-works quote is not comparable with a delivered price.
Prepare bag type, fill weight, dimensions, material and thickness, quantity per design, artwork, valve/zipper needs, destination and target delivery window before requesting a quote.
If unsure about the format or material, say so. Ask for two realistic quantity options—a trial run and a larger run—to see how setup costs affect unit price. Base the quantities on the supplier's actual capability, not a competitor's website.
Before production, approve artwork, dimensions, material, valve and zipper positions, colour references and seals. If possible, fill a sample with your coffee and test opening, sealing, shelf display and carton fit.
Conclusion
The best order is not always the lowest unit price or smallest MOQ. Match printing method and quantity to sales volume, design cycle, product protection and cash flow. Compare the full specification and landed cost, then order what you can realistically sell and replenish.

Is there a standard MOQ for custom coffee bags?
No. MOQ varies by bag style, material, printing process, number of designs and supplier equipment. Ask for the minimum per order and per design.
Is digital printing always cheaper for small orders?
It often reduces setup costs because it does not require dedicated engraved cylinders, but the unit price may be higher. Compare the full order total, not only the price per bag.
Can I order several coffee bag designs in one run?
Sometimes. The supplier must confirm the total order minimum and the minimum quantity for each design. Separate designs may require separate setup or print changes.
